Description

The Beovision 5502 replaced the Beovision 5500 and was a very similar set. The cabinet was very similar in appearance, though the parts that had been black on the previous model were now finished in metallic grey. The Beovision Video Terminal was also re-finished to match. The reason for the model change was the introduction of the new 77XX series chassis. This was in many ways similar to the final version of the previous 33XX type, to the point where most of the circuit modules were interchangeable, though there was one big change: electronic tuning. The 77XX models included a microprocessor controlled “search and store” tuning system that offered a number of advantages over the bank of tuning knobs that the 33XX models used. 32 programmes could be stored, tuning was automatic and could be operated from either the set or the remote control. In the case where the channel number was known, this could be entered directly, making the tuning “instant”. Text copyright © Beocentral. Unauthorised reproduction prohibited.

Teletext was a standard fitting for the 1984 season but it reverted to being an option for the rest of the production run. A single A/V socket (DIN A/V standard) was standard though a dual A/V interface could be specified, providing an extra DIN A/V socket (SCART in later versions), at extra cost. In its final form, the Beovision 5502 was an outstanding set. Fully equipped and built to the highest standards, it set standards of picture quality, sound quality, reliability and durability that have yet to be matched by any other Beovision. At the time of writing, even the newest examples are now 20 years old, yet it is still not difficult to find examples which easily outperform any set in the current Beovision range. This achievement represents a high point in television engineering which may never be equalled. Text copyright © Beocentral. Unauthorised reproduction prohibited.

The Beovision 5502 was withdrawn in 1987. It was the last 20” Beovision model to be offered with mono sound. Text copyright © Beocentral. Unauthorised reproduction prohibited.
