Beovox P 50

(1975-1977)

Description

An interesting design of panel loudspeaker, which was originally designed to be used with the quadraphonic 6000 system. The thin panels lent themselves to smaller rooms where four large speakers such as Beovox 5700 would encounter strong objections from all but the listener. Text copyright © Beocentral. The P 50 introduced the angled front panel to the Beovox range that was to later become a distinguishing feature of the whole range. An angled resin front panel and resin back sandwiched a slim wooden carcass. In fact a little visual trickery was used by B&O as the wooden side panels were considerably slimmer than the real depth of the speaker, but when hung on the wall, this deception was most successful. The loudspeaker was a three way unit but due to the shallowness of the cabinet, two 12.5cm woofers were fitted in addition to a 9cm phase link unit and a 2.5cm tweeter. This configuration, with the exception of the woofers, was similar to that seen in the S 45 that was to come later, though that speaker had a single larger 25cm woofer. This was the first therefore of the very popular Uniphase range. As the range was added to, the P 50 was re-launched as the P 45 and a smaller model, the P 30 introduced. Text copyright © Beocentral. When mounted as suggested, the P 45/P 50 offered excellent sound quality from a small enclosure and was a long lasting model in the range, lasting longer than any other model and even being sold for a short time with the revised Uniphase range.
